Fun Fact:

The Timberline Lodge, which was used for the outside scenes of The Shining, is just around the corner of the mountain where I took my students on stream surveys for my Stream Habitat Assessment and Improvement course.

A movie based on a book written by a man who participated in many of the events shown.

Your hint gave this away @Snargfargle.  The Razor's Edge.  Two versions of this movie were made.

Maugham led an interesting life. He was raised in France so English was actually his second language. He became a medical doctor then wrote about his work as a physician in the slums of Lambeth and decided to pursue literature instead. At one time he was the most well-known playwright in England as well. Too old to enlist in the Army during WWI, he volunteered as an ambulance driver and then, later, as spy for the British Secret Service. I like Bill Murray's version of the movie because it actually expands a bit on the book. Both versions of the movie are available on YouTube.

Could be, but I'm thinking of a different song. Let's just say that that young fellow from north of the border better hightail it out of there if he knows what's good for him.

The cowboy in El Paso actually took a bullet over it.

No, I have no idea. I don't know much about country or western to be honest.

Some of these have been tough for me to figure out but I thought to try to-day.

Some of them ARE very tough. I would have guessed the Age of Aquarius, though, but that would have been rather the exception than the rule.

Three step towards the door - Lynard Sknard judging from the mean looking hombre coming through the window.

This is a pop song from the 60s, not a country western song, although a country version of it charted ten years later. A Spanish version of the song also was released. If you saw Guardians of the Galaxy II you have heard it.

Jay & The Americans Come A Little Bit Closer

Quote
Come a Little Bit Closer
Jay & The Americans
In a little café
Just the other side of the border
She was a-sitting there a-givin' me
Looks that made my mouth water
So I started walking her way
She belonged to bad man, José

And I knew, yes I knew I should leave
When I heard her say, yeah

Come a little bit closer
You're my kind of man
So big and so strong

Come a little bit closer
I'm all alone
And the night is so long

So we started to dance
In my arms, she felt so inviting
And I just couldn't resist
Just one little kiss, so exciting
Then I heard the guitar player say
"Vamoos, José's on his way!"

And I knew, yes I knew I should run
But then I heard her say, yeah

Come a little bit closer
You're my kind of man
So big and so strong

Come a little bit closer
I'm all alone
And the night is so long

Then the music stopped
When I looked the café was empty
Then I heard José say
"Man, you know you're in trouble plenty"

So I dropped my drink from my hand
And through the window, I ran
And as I rode away
I could hear her say to José, yeah

Come a little bit closer
You're my kind of man
So big and so strong

Come a little bit closer
I'm all alone
And the night is so long

La-la-la-la la-la-la-la (Come a little bit closer)
La-la-la-la la-la-la-la (Come a little bit closer)
Woah woah (Come a little bit closer)
I can still hear her say (Come a little bit closer)
La-la-la-la la-la-la-la (Come a little bit closer)

Sounds good... there's a ton of songs about Mexico, and I was hoping it wouldn't be the one by Adam Ant...

I went through the GoTG soundtrack... most are from the 70s, the ones that are from the 60s ... no luck, though.

Ah.. okay, hmm... interesting, it doesn't appear to be on the soundtrack list Wikipedia has.

Wrong movie, it's the second one.

I've re-watched the hilarious intro a dozen times.
