Interesting California picture

So I found this picture of USS California on FB (Bunker Brigade)

 

What stands out to me, is the the foremost lower 5in mounts have bloomers on them, and the upper mounts do not. I suppose its because the lower mounts were wetter?

Agreed, that is an awesome photo. It really brings home the enormous beam of the ship.
