Decent concealment with good firepower and radar makes Orkan a natural born killer of other DDs, weak but fast and good range torps are only addition, and being EU DD she has no smoke, so if you want to farm better take range MBAAE cap skill. I like her and play from time to time, she shares a cap with Smaland, similar type of play.

As dommo77 indicated above

Orkan is niché specialist of an Anti-DD DD, but compared to her half-sister the Lightning she makes some painful sacrifices that drasticality curtail her ability to perform outside her role.

You have half the torpedo armament compared to Lightning & lack smokes being the most obvious drawbacks.

You don't want to be trading shots or being caught in the open, instead you're ideal habitat is lurking around caps with solid cover close by -atleast until there's less ships afloat

Think of a Cossack without smoke.  Both are basically gunboats with one set of torp launchers.  Like you, I received the Orkan recently as a freebie in a SC and use it as an anti-DD boat.  Since I play almost exclusively co-op, the lack of smoke is not a problem for me.

Cossack has better shell arcs, if I remember correctly.

Orkan is very good at hunting flanking torp boats. She works well to counter cap also. Save your radar till you are spotted. The torps have very good range and speed, good for dumping in water between islands.

Completely opposite. Cossack has "classic" British 120-mm shell ballistics with 808-m/s MV, while Orkan and Lightning, while have a slower MV of 774-m/s has heavier, more aerodynamically efficient shells that retain their speed better, resulting in much better ballistics that can be readily proved by Third-party sites and calculators.

And in terms of gun handling, Orkan has much better full salvo angles to the front and slightly worse to the rear.

Cossack has 808 m/s HE shell velocity, Orkan has 774. I remember Orkans’ shells going all over the place in a gunfight, while Cossack can destroy enemy DDs.

That's strange, their dispersion (both horizontal and vertical) and sigma are basically the same, shell flight time to max range is better for Orkan (9.7 vs 12 secs), she has faster reload but less guns, I find her artillery quite reliable when play.

I've stated that myself just before, despite lower shell MV, Orkan and Lightning use heavier and more aerodynamically efficient (that means they retain their initial kinetic energy better and bleed less speed) shells that have flatter ballistic arcs for almost the entire range.

Can you prove your claim by some data like what are your main gun hit rates for Orkan and Cossack respectively?

What's even stranger is that why a gamer would make such a statement that is completely wrong, and then trying to somehow "prove" it.

FWIW she's my second most played ship in Ranked (after Smaland); as already indicated, she's a great DD-hunter. It helps if you have team-mates who are awake enough to shoot at the things you light up with your radar, so I tend to find her more suitable for competitive modes (when at T8) than Randoms, although I stopped playing the latter in anything a while ago now.

Torps are fast, but few in number and lacking alpha, so you need your bigger mates around to efficiently take down fatter opposition.

Obviously, a coal radar mod is a good addition.

No, it's just how I remember the feeling. I haven't played Orkan since a long while, and Cossack maybe once or twice last year. Maybe I'll try them again for snowflakes.
