The last time I heard "Discretion is the better part of valor" being said was by a butter bar who was younger than I was but was making me wear my gas mask for an hour after a field exercise was over as "punishment" for taking it off during his mock gas attack so that I could see better to treat a soldier who had broken his leg jumping from a truck. He was the only bad officer in the entire battalion though, most of them were good to excellent. He also once screamed at a group of us when he almost ran us over with his jeep and we had to jump into a ditch rather than saluting him. He turned white as a sheet when he finally recognized the regimental command sergeant major, who was one of our group. The CSM didn't say a word to the lieutenant, he just waked up to him, called us all to attention, and crisply saluted. Later that day I saw the lieutenant mowing the grass at battalion headquarters. I vowed to never go out with any unit that lieutenant was assigned to ever again. I was successful at this until a few years later when I ran into him when we both were assigned to the same infantry unit for desert training. He was screaming at the top of his lungs because he'd gotten his hand smashed when he'd put it between two armored personnel carriers and then told the driver of the back one to move up until the front of his track touched his hand (he was trying to evenly space all the the vehicles about four inches apart for some unknown reason).
