What's your rig?

Recommended Posts

While I have always worked on the PC's I have owned (ie; hardware and software repairs/upgrades), I had never built a PC from scratch until this past January (2023). Always bought a Dell prebuilt. Decided late last fall (2022) that my old Dell XPS 8700 workhorse I bought new in 2013 was ready to retire. It still worked and did everything I needed for my web design and photo editing work (just getting slower over time), and played WOWS ok, but it was getting long in the tooth and didn't support Windows 11 (could install it and bypass compatibility checks and such but not worth it). It was time.

So, this time, I decided to build my 1st one from scratch vs buying a prebuilt (especially after pricing a Dell out the way I wanted = YIKES! 😱). Spent a couple months deciding what I wanted (not the latest, greatest, and most powerful but still somewhat new and able to be upgraded as needed down the road - wanted 5-7 years out of it at least) and getting good deals on parts. Finally had it all, after a few restarts along the way (like returning a CPU for a different one), and put it together in January. I am really happy with it. Does all the "work" I need at blazing speeds and plays WOWS at 180fps +/- vs 70fps on the old Dell. 7+ months in and going strong. Probably won't ever do a prebuilt again as the whole process from research, to bargain hunting, to assembly was a blast.

The new system...

  • Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow
  • Motherboard: MSI PRO Z690-A WiFi DDR4
  • CPU: Intel 13th Gen i5-13400
  • CPU Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280 (Note - overkill for the CPU but was purchased for the original Intel 12th Gen i5-12600K I had and returned which needed it - just kept and used it anyway)
  • PSU: Corsair RM750X Modular 750W / 80+ Certified / Gold
  • GPU: PNY RTX 3060 12GB XLR8 Gaming Revel Epic-X RGB Dual Fan
  • PSU PCIe Cable: ARESGAME Corsair Compatible Single PCIe 8-Pin (6+2) Cable (for GPU so I wouldn't have extra plugs hanging)
  • RAM: Kingston FURY Beast DDR4 3200 MHz 32GB CL16 (2X16) Non-RGB
  • Boot Drive: Kingston KC600 256GB SATA 2.5” SSD (just Windows on this)
  • Storage/Programs Drive: Kingston FURY Renegade 1TB PCIe Gen 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD (all programs run off this drive and any saved files go on here)
  • Case Fan (3X Intake & 1X Exhaust): Arctic P12 PWM PST A-RGB Black 120MM
  • Case Fan (2X Exhaust): Arctic P14 PWM PST A-RGB Black 140MM (for use w/ CPU Cooler - the one I got didn't have A-RGB lighting - these actually were oirginally going to be my intake fans but then went with a liquid cooler vs air)
  • PWM Fan Controller: Arctic 10 Fan PWM Control Hub
  • SATA Power Extension Cable: Longdex 11.8” Black Sleeved (for use w/ PWM control hub)
  • Motherboard Accessory Tray: Corsair CC-8900466 Black (for use w/ PWM control hub)
  • PWM Extension Cables (for use w/ PWM control hub)
  • A-RGB Fan LED Controller: Razer Chroma Addressable RGB Control Hub
  • DVD/CD Drive: LG GP65NB60 USB External DVD/CD Burner
  • Operating System: Windows 11 Home
  • Keyboard: Razer Ornata Chroma RGB
  • Mouse: Razer DeathAdder Essential

Got all of the above for about $1400. Could get it cheaper right now but at the time the prices were good. For a similar Dell prebuilt it would have been 2K+/-.

Why? That 500w one will easily power that system with a 6800xt, especially if you don't overclock. The 6800xt has a 280w TDP, that 5600 is a 70w part, so that's 350 for the most power hungry components, at peak power draw, a situation you'll only get when purposely stressing the components with furmark and prime95, for example. The rest isn't going to draw an additional 150w - maybe 50w at that, especially if you don't have like 3 high end SSDs in there. So you still have headroom with a 500w unit.

I mean, if you want to or just know you'll feel better upgrading the PSU, sure, go ahead, but you won't need to.

Past its warranty now by years. I thought if i replace the card, i buy something modular or semi-modular now, and as seeing the trend with cards to increase performance through consumption, i wouldnt mind if its more futureproof.

Wont mind 10 year warranty either, some Seasonic models come with that much.

What differences have you noticed between the two speeds?

Although not speed related the graphics are better for one. That makes it more pleasing to view and helps me with my bad vision see better which helps with better aim and just seeing the game/battle as it unfolds easier.

Speed wise specifically, a higher FPS means you get a better (more crisp/smoother) interaction with the game which does help with the gameplay a lot.

I also built another PC for my daughter...mostly to stream from Netflix/Amazon and play Sims 😞 When she was much younger, she used to sit on my lap and play the Southern Dragon in COOP (or she used to enjoy watching the cook roam the decks of the Missouri), but at 15....I have no chance to get her into Warships now.

13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700K, 3400 Mhz, 16 Core(s), 24 Logical Processor(s)

Cooler Master Hyper 212

Gigabyte B760I Aorus Pro

Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32 GB - 6000 Mhz

Geforce 1050ti (my old graphics card)

Crucial 1 TB M.2 SSD

Crucial 1 TB M.2 SSD

Toshiba 32" TV

Corsair 2000D Airflow Case

6 - 120mm RGB Case Fans

1 - 140mm RGB Case Fan

850W SFX Modular PSU

This one is really small.  The MB is about 1' x 1'.  I put Windows 11 on it since I couldn't get 10, seems to be OK.  I just need to get everything mounted in her room.  Sure beats the x286 I had at home when I was her age!

GTX1070 graphics card

1x200gb +2x500gb SSD drives +1tb HDD for storage

basically a 2016 1k € rig with some minor upgrades (it came with a 960gtx and only one SDD drive) over the years. it's good enough for Wows and some old games, but it does run into issues with modern games due to it being a simple 4core cpu with no HT abilities and the old sdd drives slowing down load times in games like tw wh3

I use an iBuyPower prebuild that I got back in 2020, it was an amazing deal at Costco and I knew the second I saw the PC and the components that it was a must buy. I've since upgraded the IBP branded PSU from 600w to an EVGA 650w as I was having issues with random crashes. Eventually I'd like to upgrade the RAM to 32GB and replace the IBP branded AIO with something from Corsair or Thermaltake.

I saw one of these Lenovo Legion desktops at Costco about a year ago and it looked like a really good deal. It didn't have liquid cooling which is a dealbreaker for me so I ended up not getting it.

Oh man, my PC being over 10 years old by now... Aside from few things being swapped there and there (e.g GTX 660 -> RX 560 -> 1070 Ti)

  • System, is NixOS 23.11
  • i5-3450
  • MSI Gaming GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 8GB
  • MSI - OPTIX G272 monitor
  • Some cheap TFT Monitor of similar sizes, as second one
  • G600 mouse
  • HHKB keyboard (Topre switches are bless, and that kb layout, very comfy)

Runs WoWs, Hunt Showdown, fairly decently, for what it is. Just.. One day, CPU upgrade..

At the end of the day though, it does get the job done, and I adore this PC
